Vision
By providing a continuum of care, Shalom House will end chronic homelessness for mentally ill/chemically dependent women in St. Louis. Additionally, Shalom House will help educate the community on these issues and serve as an advocate on behalf of our clients.
How does Shalom House find clients?
Shalom House receives all referrals from
Catholic Charities Housing Resource Center (HRC). HRC is St. Louis' most comprehensive housing counseling organization. After conducting an assessment, HRC refers individuals and families to the appropriate facility in St. Louis City or County for shelter and/or services. Shalom House is one of the agencies that proudly works with HRC, thus HRC refers single homeless women in St. Louis City to Shalom House for shelter.
Who does Shalom House serve?
Shalom House residents are single, chronically homeless women ages 18 and older.
What does "chronically homeless" mean? 
The federal definition of chronically homeless is - "an unaccompanied homeless individual with a disabling condition who has either been continuously homeless for a year or more, or has had at least four episodes of homelessness in the past three years." 2
Shalom House conducts a 24-hour Emergency Shelter Program, a 24-month Transitional Housing Program, and an Aftercare Program to meet this mission and vision. By providing direct services to chronically homeless women with severe mental illness and chemical dependency, Shalom House is helping break many cycles that directly influence the entire community.
Why is Shalom House Vital to the St. Louis Community?
In the United States, there are currently 14 metropolitan areas with populations between two and three million people. Between 2005 and 2010, twelve increased in size! St. Louis is one of only eight cities who managed to grow in population and maintain or decrease homelessness. 3
Neighborhood
Shalom House belongs to the Gibson Heights Neighborhood Association of the 17th Ward of St. Louis, which is supported by
Park Central Development.
The mission of Park Central Development is to promote quality residential and commercial development in the neighborhoods of the 17th Ward, implement infrastructure and beautification projects, plan for future development, improve security, market the area to new residents and visitors, and find funding sources for neighborhood improvement projects.
St. Louis City Continuum of Care
Shalom House is a proud member of the St. Louis City Continuum of Care, the coordinating system for more than 50 nonprofit agencies committed to ending homelessness in the St. Louis Area. It is a major part of our community’s plan to organize and deliver housing and services to meet the needs of people who are homeless.
