Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are critical to the success of Shalom House, and we are always looking for more help! There are several ways in which individuals or groups can volunteer their time and talent.

Off-Site
  • Collect canned food, hygiene or cleaning products (see Wish List for specifics)
  • Write encouraging notes to residents
  • Use your hobby to bless Shalom House residents (for instance, if you crochet, make prayer shawls, scarves; or for a kids group make little goodie bags for residents, etc.)

Short Time Commitment
  • Prepare a meal for Emergency Shelter residents (25 women) -- option to serve meal
  • Organize the food pantry
  • Sort donations (sheets, clothing, household items)
  • Help with special projects such as mailings or planning client party (Thanksgiving, Christmas)
  • Help a woman move into her apartment by hauling furniture, etc.
  • Teach Skills Class once or twice (training on topics of your own expertise)
  • Organize an afternoon of game or activities with the residents
  • Perform manual labor, painting, and maintenance projects around Shalom House
  • Deep-clean around the building
  • Organize an outing with the residents, such as a trip to the zoo, bowling, or shopping
  • Put together personal hygiene packs for residents moving in
  • Landscaping, mowing the lawn, weed-eating, etc.
  • Check our on-site Food Pantry for expired foods, clean out refrigerators, etc.
  • Help recruit auction items and/or volunteer the night of our annual Signature Event

Regular Commitment
  • Volunteer in our on-site Computer Lab (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday)
  • Create a client party such as a monthly birthday party or other occasion (St. Patrick's Day, Memorial Day BBQ)
  • Make a monthly commitment to bring food for Emergency Shelter residents (25 women)
  • Do a food pick-up for Shalom House once/week
  • Volunteer to assist with administrative office work
  • Contact Meal Providers and volunteers to confirm schedules
  • Seasonally update the residential area bulletin boards
  • Serve in a Shalom House group such as on the Shalom House Auxiliary (meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 10:00 a.m.) or Shalom Outreach Society (adults ages 18-40)

Interested in Volunteering at Shalom House?

The first step is to attend a two-hour Volunteer Orientation.  During your orientation, we will provide a tour of Shalom House's residential programs so you may experience our mission first-hand and then we'll gather as a group to discuss various volunteer opportunities and answer any questions you may have.  Volunteer Orientation is held in the Conference Room at Shalom House during the scheduled times below.  Please be sure to make your reservation in advance by contacting Rebecca Tucker, rebecca@shalomhousestl.org or 314.534.1010 ext. 16.
